From the WERS Administrator
November 08

Welcome

As the year draws to an end we begin to start looking at finialising our projects for this year and look at what projects we have for next year.

WERS has been through some major changes this year, with the release of the NFRC ratings late last year and stage 2 released in April this year. We have had the web site redeveloped and are continuing on a daily basis to update and change to better suit the needs of our members and the public.

Last E-news we discussed the introduction of the new and improved advanced window search function. The release of that article saw the window search page jump to the highest number of hits we have ever had showing just how effective these newsletters are.

Since our last newsletter we have continued to develop WERS and particularly the web site to make it a user friendly tool.

The Certified Products directory is now a dynamic online web page. The tables are dynamically created from an online server. The benefit of this is a faster update turnaround, more consistent formatting and greater flexibility with displays. Another huge benefit to the users, is the ability to hover over the glazing code to reveal a full description. The use of a web based database opens up a wide range of options and brings WERS ratings to life.

Keep a look out for other changes to the site as we continue to develop. We have begun work on developing the commercial section of the site and have also been working on an online compliance form. If you have any feedback or suggestions for the new Certified Products Directory or the web site please let us know.

Section J Commercial - Training

As energy provisions and stringency level ramps up it is becoming increasingly more important to keep up to date with not only residential but also commercial energy provisions.

The AWA commercial sub committee has developed in conjunction with ABSA (Association of Building Sustainability Assessors) a training day specifically for Section J of the BCA.

The training will be a 1 day course lead by ABSA President, David Howard. This course will be running over 3 days in February 2009. The course will follow the east coast starting in NSW, followed by QLD and VIC. Keep a look out on the web site for updates and registration forms.

Commercial Energy Ratings

I have been asked to provide a U value and SHGC for a Section J report, We don't have any ratings, can we just use the glass values?

NO, you can't use just the glass values. The BCA, like residential stipulates whole window values. Some window companies have begun to have custom ratings produced. The AWA commercial committee has identified this as an issue, and in response has started to develop generic values for use by WERS members in commercial buildings. Like residential, they will not be freely available, but will be attached to WERS member tables. The WERS generics are de for release on the 1st December, 2008.
