From the WERS Administrator
December 08

Welcome

Welcome to the final E-newsletter for 2008. The end of the year is upon us and as we finalise the projects for 2008 we are already well underway for the new and exciting work in 2009.

This year has seen WERS grow substantially, not only in the over 30,000 ratings, but in training and awareness.

WERS products are now making their way to the consumers. We receive daily phone calls from home owners discussing WERS results and efficient windows. With WERS labels now starting to appear in Bunnings Warehouse stores Australia wide the public awareness of WERS is bound to grow.

The WERS for commercial section of the site has been updated with a certified products directory and an advanced search engine.

The custom ratings have started to populate and will continue to grow on a regular basis. Generic tables will be available the first week of the new year.

2009 will be another big year for the AWA and WERS. The Sustainable Windows Alliance project will be the focus on everyone's radar in the new year. With the AWA and WERS being heavily involved we will be able to use to results to better prepare our members for future developments in the move to creating sustainable buildings.

The Federal government has announced the release of the Green Loans Scheme, offering home owners low or no interest loan of up to $10,000 for "green" renovations. The AWA will be working with regulatory bodies and assessors to help ensure windows and films play a key role in the program.

Both the AWA and WERS sites have members only sections. These areas have exclusive information and features for our members. The sites currently use a single password for all members.

To give more benefit to our members, and provide a support that is only available to members we have created a secure sign in page with unique passwords.

A trial version is in place for the logo and certificate. Keep a look out in the new year for the launch of the new sign in, a letter will be mailed out with your personal password.

Commercial Energy Ratings

I have a Section J report and I need to meet a certain U value and SHGC. What values do I need to provide to ensure I meet them?

When a Section J report comes in you must have an equal to or lower U-value and an EQUAL TO or LOWER SHGC. Unlike residential where its +/- 10% for SHGC, the commercial building can always have a lower SHGC than the report value. A commercial building has a larger reliance on the cooling loads. Providing a lower SHCG will ensure the cooling loads of the building are always less than the required maximum allowable report values.
